After a grueling regular season, local high school baseball teams have reached the culmination of months of hard work. The state tournament offers a chance for teams to play for the top prize.
In Class 6A, the Davis Darts earned the No. 3 seed, making the team one of the top contenders for the state crown. Davis won Region 1 with a 13-2 record and enter the state tournament with a 19-6 mark overall. Davis finished region play one game ahead of Fremont. The Darts’ only league losses were to Fremont and Layton. Davis also headed into the state tournament on a roll, having won seven games in a row.
With the No. 3 seed, Davis didn’t have to play in the preliminary regionals and instead skipped to the super regionals, a best-of-three series that began on Wednesday, after our press deadline. Davis hosted Syracuse on Wednesday and Thursday, with a tentative game three later in the day on Thursday, if necessary. A Davis win in the series would advance the Darts to bracket play on May 19 against the winner of Herriman and Fremont.
The baseball playoffs are double elimination for teams that reach the bracket round.
Farmington
The Phoenix may have struggled this season with a 3-12 record in region play and 5-20 overall. However, Farmington is still alive in the 6A playoffs, having advanced past the regionals to the super regionals.
Farmington won a best-of-three series over Westlake two games to 1 on May 9 and 10, all while playing each game on the road. The Phoenix won game one 4-3 and then rebounded from a 14-8 defeat to win the decisive game three by the count of 9-2.
Farmington’s reward for winning the regionals round: a best-of-three series with top seed American Fork.
The 7-21 Phoenix now must face the 21-4 Cavemen. Game one was on Wednesday, followed by game two and game three (if necessary) on Thursday.
Viewmont
The 5A state tournament has begun, and ninth-seeded Viewmont has advanced to the super regionals to face Murray on Wednesday and Thursday.
In the regionals, Viewmont improved to 18-9 with a two-game sweep of Bonneville on May 9 and 10. The Region 5 co-champion Vikings now have three wins over Bonneville on the season. Viewmont’s regionals wins were decisive 10-0 and 12-6 wins. In game one, Jack Owen struck out six batters and got the win on the mound. Boston Williams also had two RBI, while Kade Marriot and Spencer Rees hit doubles. The following day, Viewmont recorded 14 hits in a six-run victory. Beckham Smith was the star, batting in three runs and hitting a double. Aiden Groves had two RBI.
The super regionals now feature Viewmont against eighth-seeded Murray on the road on Wednesday and Thursday. The winner of 16th-seeded Skyline and top-seeded Maple Mountain awaits.
Woods Cross
The Wildcats also survived the regionals and advanced to the super regionals. Woods Cross, seeded 10th, played at seventh-seeded Olympus on Wednesday (after our press deadline) before a Thursday matchup in game two.
During the regular season, Woods Cross shared the Region 5 title with Viewmont with an 11-3 record. The team is 18-9 overall and posted a 2-0 series win over Box Elder in the regionals on May 9 and 10. The Wildcats prevailed 11-0 in game one in a contest that only went 4 ½ innings. Beau Blackwell and Thomas Pattison both hit home runs for Woods Cross. In game two, a 5-1 Wildcats’ win, Heston White struck out 10 Box Elder batters.
Bountiful
The Redhawks lost a pair of games at Skyline in the regionals May 9 and 10, falling 9-4 and 18-11. Bountiful’s season ended in the opening round, leaving the Redhawks with a 11-16. Bountiful finished Region 5 play with an 8-6 mark, good enough for fourth place.
