BOUNTIFUL—It’s time once again for the annual Coats for Kids Car Show June 13-14. It’s in its 27th year and sponsored by the Bountiful Rotary. The event is a charity car show to raise money to provide warm winter clothes to elementary children in south Davis schools.

“There are about 18 schools,” said organizer Krista Simonsen. “We helped 827 kids last year.”

Coats for Kids is a voucher program, she said. The principals and teachers from the schools identify the children in need and give a voucher to Walmart to the parent so the child can go shopping for a brand new winter coat, mittens and boots in their size.”

The child gets to pick what they want and they don’t know their parent or guardian was not able to afford it without the voucher,” said Simonsen. “We want to preserve the dignity of the parent/guardian/grandparent.”

The show kicks off at 5 p.m., Friday, June 13 on Main Street in Bountiful, she said. “We’ll be at the Bountiful Town Square from 5-9 p.m. The Food Court opens at 5 p.m. Come eat at our epic food court. We have Bountiful’s own Vito’s cheese steak, Texas Roadhouse pulled pork and more.”

A Cool Car Parade featuring 75 cars starts on Main Street at 6 p.m. “You’ll never know what you’ll see,” Simonsen said. “From 5-9 the M Street Bridge Band will be live at the Town Square stage. Prize giveaways will be happening, a hula hoop contest and other fun activities.”

At 8 p.m. is the fan favorite Smokin’ Tire Burnout on 200 South off Main, she said. “Don’t miss the squealing tires and smoke.”

Cars of all varieties will be displayed at the Bountiful City Park, Saturday, June 14 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. There will be a food court, music and prize drawings.

A Patriotic Program to honor all veterans, first responders and their families will be at noon. “There will be skydivers bringing in a flag for a flag ceremony,” said Simonsen. “A hula hoop contest is at 1 p.m. Sammy the Clown will be creating balloon animals, there will be face painting and Magu Ciru will perform street magic.”

A Grand Prize giveaway of a Young Powersports Surron electric bike will be held at 3 p.m., she said. “Charity tickets for the drawing are available during the show. This year the Salt Lake City Ghostbusters will be coming both days.”

The rotary doesn’t want the credit, said Simonsen, “only the feeling of joy that comes with the giving.”
