The Farmington High girls golf team placed fourth at the 6A state tournament, marking the school’s highest placement since the doors opened seven years ago. Freshman Aspen Taylor shot a 76 and 79 during the two-day event at Meadowbrook May 20-21 to tie for 10th place in leading the Phoenix squad.

“What a great year!” said head coach Stephanie Belnap. “Aspen played well on Day One, but the rest of our team didn’t play to their potential. But, they went out and played well the second day and we all couldn’t be happier about our finish which is awesome! Two of our four counting scores improved by 12 and 13 strokes respectfully on the second day to help pull us up.”

Belnap noted that Taylor also tied for the lowest freshman at the tournament. “Her work ethic is amazing!,” Belnap said. “She has made a goal to play college golf and she puts the work in towards that goal. She understands what it takes with two siblings that have played college sports. I believe she is well on her way!”

Junior Kate Dewsnup had rounds of 88 and 79 to finish in 22nd place at state with senior Tynisha Coleman (31st), senior Claire Norton (tied for 52nd), senior Ellie Baugh (tied for 64th) and freshman Dallas Newsom (75th) also placing for Farmington.

Also on the FHS team this season were Abby Austin, Brinklee Bradshaw, Emily Dallas, Paisley Gibb, Leah Larsen, Kylie McKeown, Avery Rice, Caroline Rigby, Gigi Tapia and Eve Wilcox.

“We had a strong season all around with 3 first-place finishes, 2 seconds and 1 third,” said Belnap. “Every member of our team played either JV or varsity which is great experience moving forward! We have six seniors leaving so there will be lots of new players joining the team. I am proud of the girls. They were so close to a region win! They are competitive and wanted to perform well and they worked towards it all season!”

Belnap has been assisted by Bridgette Volk and Sarah Adams on the coaching staff this spring.

Davis

The Davis High girls golf team had a team score of 375, 92 strokes over par on Day One at the 6A state tournament and failed the make the cut. Junior Aubree Tanner shot an 87 and a 90 to tie for 40th place as the lone Dart to play on Day Two.

“State was an amazing experience for the girls,” said head coach Mikey Jerman. “I saw a competitive spark light within a lot of the girls and a fight to finish the season strong. Aubree played two steady rounds of golf this week and it was so fun to have the opportunity to watch her final round. She hit the ball off the tee amazing and was absolutely boasting confidence on the box. It’s been so great to watch her golf game grow over the last three years and I can’t wait to watch her senior season!”

Sophomore Kate Monson, senior Haley Merrill, sophomore Haley Merrill, sophomore Emersyn Seeley, junior Bella Rice and junior Lucy Harkness also competed for Davis at state.

“I truly believe the team will ride this momentum and we will have many successful seasons to come,” Jerman said, noting Merrill’s impact on the team as the senior leader. “Haley was consistently a top-four performer for us. She stepped immensely this season and I could not be more proud of how she finished out her high school career.”

Also on the team this season were Ellie Baird, Sarah Dastrup, Kennadie Dixon, Lucy Harkness, Lexi Landvatter, Sammy Lewis, Leisl Olsen, Bella Rice, Sloane Robbins, Emersyn Seeley and Demi Traveller.

“We had an absolute blast this season. I have a coachable & fun group of girls and I could not be more proud to be their coach,” Jerman said. “It was a huge team building year for us and I cannot wait to see how we use this momentum over the next year. The team was full of outstanding, athletic, & encouraging girls that all fueled off each other in the best aspects. All nine varsity players this season hit their personal low scores during tournaments, some even doing it two or three times over the course of the season.
