Davis, Viewmont go deep into baseball playoffs, fall just short of finals berth

The Davis Darts and Viewmont Vikings may have ended their baseball seasons on sour notes with a pair of losses, but the teams had a lot to be happy about with the 2025 campaign.

Davis

Davis finished the year with an overall record of 23-8 and a region record of 13-2, winning Region 1 over Fremont by one game. The Darts, seeded third, then reeled off four consecutive victories in the Class 6A state tournament, advancing to the last round of bracket play. There, the Darts fell in back-to-back games to Lehi on May 21 and 22 after defeating the same Pioneers team a day earlier.

To begin the playoffs, Davis defeated Region 1 rival Syracuse in two games in a best-of-three super regionals series. The wins gave Davis five wins in as many tries over Syracuse this season. Both playoff wins came at home on May 15, with the Darts prevailing 10-0 and 5-2. Game one only went 4 ½ innings, as the Darts piled up 10 hits while allowing just three. Caymen Sanchez hit a home run and drove in three runs. Later in the day, in a three-run victory, Davis turned a 2-2 game in the top of the seventh inning into a 5-2 lead thanks to three runs. Jaxon Marble hit a home run and had three RBI in game two.

The two wins kept Davis alive.

The Darts then took down Region 2 foe Herriman on May 19 by the count of 8-2. Lincoln Green was the winning pitcher and had three strikeouts. Tyson Baggett hit a home run and drove in two more runs for the Darts. Carter Garrett hit a double and triple, and he drove in two runs as well.

On May 20, Davis kept its hot streak alive, this time upending Region 3 foe Lehi by the count of 5-3. Davis outhit the Pioneers 10-5 and got five strikeouts from winning pitcher Wally Grant. Four Dart players hit doubles, while four players recorded an RBI.

The victory set up a rematch with Lehi – and then another.

Lehi responded to win the next game, 7-6, despite 12 hits from the Darts to six by the Pioneers. Talbot hit a home run and brought in two others. But Lehi’s 2-1 advantage in the seventh inning was the difference.

In the double-elimination tournament, the two squads met yet again, this time the next day. The winner would move to the 6A championship, while the losing team would end its season.

The third time wasn’t the charm for Davis.

Davis came up short, losing 7-5. The fourth inning proved to be problematic for the Darts, as they gave up six Lehi runs and couldn’t add to the scoreboard themselves. Caleb Weaver hit a home run and had an RBI in a losing effort.

On the season, several Davis players contributed to the success and put up big numbers. Talbot hit seven home runs and had 13 doubles and 40 RBI. Marble hit four home runs and had nine doubles and 28 RBI. Grant brought in 28 RBI and hit eight doubles. Sam Sevy led the team with 48 strikeouts and had a 4-2 record at the plate.

Viewmont

The Vikings were seeded ninth in the 5A ranks but went farther in the state tournament than any other Region 5 team. Viewmont finished tied for first in Region 5 with an 11-3 record and then had a nice run in the 5A playoffs before bowing out just before the state finals.

Viewmont opened with a 2-0 sweep over Bonneville in the regionals, May 9 and 10. The Vikings had already defeated Bonneville three times during the regular season, though it can be difficult beating a team multiple times. The Vikings were up for the challenge and prevailed 10-0 in game one and 12-6 in game two to win the series. Jack Owen was brilliant in game one, pitching a no-hitter and striking out six batters. The Vikings had 14 hits of their own. Game two was at Bonneville, but Viewmont still controlled the contest, jumping out to a 6-1 lead after the first inning. Nine Vikings had at least one RBI, with Beckham Smith bringing in three runs.

In the super regionals, Viewmont lost to Murray 9-1 in game one on May 15. However, the Vikings responded later in the day with a 4-3 victory in game two to keep their season alive. On May 16, Viewmont eliminated Murray and won the series with a 6-2 triumph. Kimball Essig hit a home run and drove in two runs.

In bracket play, Viewmont lost to a strong Maple Mountain team on May 19 by the count of 10-0. With their backs against the wall, the Vikings continued their quest for a state title by beating Cyprus 4-1 on May 20. Kade Marriot hit a triple and had three RBI, while winning pitcher Cal Miller struck out five batters.

On May 21, the Vikings saw the 2025 season come to an end. And it happened by the same score and against the same opponent as their previous loss.

Viewmont lost to Maple Mountain for the chance to advance further in the tournament. Again, the score was 10-0. The Vikings finished the year with a solid 21-12 record.

The Vikings lose some key players such as Marriot, Miller and Smith. However, some experienced talent will be back in 2026. Head coach Hunter Royball will be excited to have Essig and Owen back in the lineup, among other players.
