After only a few clues, Bank of Utah’s Where’s the Wallet Cash Quest has a winner. Stazie Rigby, Koaly Bates and Jennete Boone found the wallet on Aug. 9. 

“I worked together with my mom and younger sister,” said Bates. “We’ve always liked treasure hunts and puzzles. We saw the Utah treasure hunt and got excited and started it but then it got found.”

Bates said her mom saw the Bank of Utah treasure hunt and sent it to her. “We didn’t want to do another one but then we couldn’t help ourselves. We were determined not to lose.”

It took them seven days total with research to find the wallet, she said. “We only did three hikes. They gave the sixth clue early at the bank. We deciphered that clue and we knew it was somewhere with rocks.”

The second clue gave it away that it was Herriman, said Bates. “It had something about a copper mine. That pointed to Herriman. The sixth clue talked about rocks and that helped narrow it down pretty quickly.” 

There are only two trails to hike in Butterfield Canyon and Yellow Fork Canyon, she said. “Butterfield was confusing so we went to Yellow Fork.”

It led to the Turkey (Hollow)Trail, she said. “The clues had a food theme and by the time we got to the trailhead there was a Butterknife Trail. Mom took Butterknife. We decided we’d hike for 10 minutes and if we didn’t find anything we’d come back.”

Then mom screamed, said Bates. “She had found it in a rock formation. It was so exciting we couldn’t believe it.”

The whole trail had no rocks, she said. “The clue said to find an eye shaped rock that you could see through and find a pile of rocks. My mom saw it and went up and it was there.”

The trio won $20,000 – $10,000 to keep and $10,000 to donate to a charity of their choice. “We’re going to donate to the Utah Kids Foundation,” said Bates. “They provide medical equipment and other items to children with disabilities. I work in special education so that is my passion. I love working with that population. It is close to my heart to see that they get their basic needs met. That’s important to me.”

Bates said they’ve also got a plan for the $10,000 they get to keep. “My mom is turning 50 so we’re going to take a trip to Hawaii for her birthday. There will be 10 of us on the trip. We’re going to do an honorary hike in Hawaii.”

It was really a joint effort to find the wallet, she said. “The whole family was on the trail. My husband helped and brought our 8-month-old. She loved hiking. It created a bond to be out in nature. I’m thankful for this opportunity.”
