Bountiful found a new home this season, but in girls soccer, things are looking familiar.
The Redhawks are competing for the top spot in Region 6 in their first season in the league. This shouldn’t be a big surprise considering the team won Region 5 a year ago and placed second in that region from 2021 to 2023.
Heading into its Sept. 11 home game with Viewmont, Bountiful was 4-1 in region games, just behind 5-0 Olympus. The Redhawks have overcome a slow start to be a factor in Region 6, where they are going up against former Region 5 mates Viewmont and Woods Cross, along with new foes Olympus, Brighton, Alta and Skyline.
Bountiful’s offense has been potent in league play.
Most recently, on Sept. 4, the Redhawks shut out Alta 4-0 after jumping out to a 3-0 halftime advantage. Belle Sorensen scored twice, while Myka Page and Natalie Coulam added goals. Sorensen and Page also had assists, and Jane Hellewell assisted on two goals. Goalies Ayleen Chavez and Chloe Bryson shared the shutout in the net, with plenty of help from the Bountiful defense.
In region games, Bountiful scored 18 goals in its first five contests, three times registering at least four goals. Sorensen has been the top scorer, totaling 12 goals. The sensational senior has scored 68 goals in her productive career. This season, she had tallied four assists as of Sept. 10, second on the team. Page led the way up to this point with five assists and was second on the squad with six goals.
After its home game with Viewmont, Bountiful plays at Olympus on Monday. The Titans handed the Redhawks their only region loss so far, a 4-2 decision on Aug. 21.
Viewmont
The 3-8 Vikings are off to a 2-3 start in Region 6. Plenty of games are ahead, but the Vikings have some ground to make up in the league standings.
Viewmont has been outscored 7-5 in region games, though the team is coming off a thrilling victory over Skyline in a shootout on Sept. 8. In that contest, both teams were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. Then, after neither squad scored in the two overtime periods, the Vikings won the shootout by making four penalty kicks to Skyline’s one. In regulation, Viewmont got goals from Avery Tyler and Savannah Fowles, both in the second half. Alauna Titensor and Tally Smith had assists.
After Viewmont’s visit to Bountiful on Sept. 11, the Vikings play at Alta. On Aug. 25, Alta prevailed in a shootout when the two teams met previously.
Woods Cross
The Wildcats have had some struggles this season, even though the team has had some shining moments.
On Sept. 8, Woods Cross gave the top team in the region, Olympus, all it could handle, ultimately falling 2-1. The Wildcats’ Nixon Milliron had a second-half goal after her team trailed 2-0 at the break.
Woods Cross played at Brighton on Sept. 11, after our press deadline. Next up is a home game with Alta on Sept. 16. The Wildcats lost in a close battle to the Hawks the last time the two teams met, on Aug. 21.
