Region 1 only has five teams, so its girls soccer teams are just starting to battle against one another after a lengthy non-league schedule.
Davis had a marathon contest in its opener, falling in a closely contested matchup.
The Darts lost to Syracuse 3-2 on Tuesday to open Region 1 play. It took two overtimes to decide the game, with Syracuse scoring the game-winner before having to go to a shootout. The setback left Davis with a 7-2 record overall as it prepared for its next game at home against Layton on Thursday.
Davis had a goal in each half but allowed a pair of Syracuse scores after leading 1-0 at halftime. Neither team managed a goal in the first overtime period, as both Davis and Syracuse played tight defense. However, Syracuse clinched the win with a second-overtime goal.
In defeat, Davis got a goal from Kate Willard and another from Mckenna Couser. For Willard, a junior, it was the 11th goal of the season and the 27th of her career. Couser scored for the second time this year. Junior Samantha Maudsley has scored five goals so far this season. Junior Ellie Stowers and sophomore Reial Phongsavath each have three goals to their credit. Junior forward Avery Johnson has the team high in assists through nine games with three.
Defensively, Davis has been outstanding this season, posting five shutouts. Senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Harris has made things tough on opponents, as have her backline teammates. The Darts have given up just eight goals this season, which is the best mark in Region 1 and second in Class 6A to Lone Peak, which has surrendered four goals.
After Thursday’s game, Davis will play at Weber next Tuesday.
Farmington
The Phoenix are off to a .500 start in league play after going 6-3 in non-region contests. Farmington has nearly as many wins already this season as it did last season when it finished with an 8-8 mark.
Most recently, Farmington scored two second-half goals to upend Layton 2-1 at home on Tuesday. The Phoenix overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit and held an opponent to fewer than two goals for the seventh time this season.
Senior midfielder Taytem Grant had a goal and an assist, while teammate Tori Davis, a junior, scored as well. Grant now has five goals and two assists this season, as well as 23 goals and nine assists for her career. It was Davis’ first career goal.
Farmington hosts Weber on Friday with a chance to go into the next week with a winning record in region play.
Through the team’s first 11 games, a variety of plays have contributed.
Grant’s five goals are second-best on the team, behind junior forward Oaklee Standford, who has nine up to this point to go along with two assists. Senior Kameron Gurney has scored twice this season. Meanwhile, seven other players have registered goals, including senior Macey Call, who leads the team in assists with five. A pair of sophomore goalies have been in the net for the Phoenix. Olive Wayland and Abby Child each have 1.5 shutouts for their team.
