Bountiful, Viewmont and Woods Cross moved to Region 6 this season after several years in Region 5. The schools are about to find out what the new competition is all about on the football field.
All three teams have one final non-region game this week. Then, some intriguing league matchups will begin.
Viewmont
The Vikings have the best overall mark of any Region 6 team. Heading into this week’s game, the Vikings are 3-1 overall.
Viewmont’s defeat came last week against Weber, a 35-22 decision on the road to the Class 6A foe. It was a tale of two halves in a game where the Vikings made a valiant comeback after a rough start.
Weber jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead, scoring 14 points in both the first and second quarters. The second half belonged to Viewmont, however, starting with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Jack Savage to Benji Tolman halfway through the third quarter. The point-after kick missed, but the Vikings weren’t finished. Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Viewmont cut the deficit to 28-8. Then just 3:12 later, Savage connected with Miles Frey on a 10-yard touchdown pass. With 2:58 left in the game, it looked as though Viewmont might have a chance to pull off a comeback. Savage threw a 63-yard TD pass to Brady Clegg. A successful point-after made it 28-22.
That’s as close as Viewmont got. Weber put the game away with a touchdown in the final minute to win by 13 points.
Tolman had a huge game for Viewmont, rushing 24 times for 164 yards and four catches for 47 yards and a touchdown. Savage threw three touchdowns and compiled 214 yards on the day. Clegg paced the team with six catches for 96 yards. Defensively, Mack Youngberg, Owen Seely and Rayden David each had five catches, with Youngberg and David, along with Cooper Willoughby, each getting half a sack.
Viewmont completes its non-region slate Friday at home against out-of-state opponent Somerset Academy Losee from North Las Vegas, Nevada.
Woods Cross
The 2-2 Wildcats play at Westlake on Friday with a chance to get above .500 for the first time this season.
A week ago, Woods Cross played its best game of the season, blanking Snow Canyon 38-0 at home. All 38 points came in the first half in a dominant performance. Viliami Tapa’atoutai rushed for 157 yards and two touchdowns on just 15 carries. The senior had touchdown runs of 10 and 19 yards. Meanwhile Jesse Simmons completed only three passes, but two of them went for touchdowns, both to Shayden Gerratt—a 10-yarder to open the scoring and a 55-yarder halfway through the second quarter. Wyatt Hunter also returned a Snow Canyon pass 60 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Mason Allred added a 35-yard field goal in the final seconds of the first half.
Woods Cross recorded five sacks in the win. Also, three Wildcats had nine tackles in an outstanding effort on defense.
Bountiful
At 1-3, Bountiful hosts Park City on Friday, hoping to get some momentum for the start of Region 6 games.
The Redhawks have had some trouble putting up points, and last week was no exception. In a 21-13 loss at home to Morgan, the defending Class 5A champions had seven points in the first quarter and six in the fourth quarter but nothing in between. Still, the Redhawks were a mere point away from Morgan early in the fourth quarter at 14-13 after Dawson Allsop scored on a 5-yard pass reception from Hudson Malmrose. But Morgan scored 3 1/3 minutes later, and Bountiful couldn’t counter.
Malmrose threw for 227 yards on 62% passing. His favorite target was Lakepa Satuala, who caught six passes for 65 yards. Aisake Willis had three catches for a team-high 68 yards. Zeke Murdock led the team in rushing with 40 yards on 16 carries. The senior running back had the first points of the day when he plunged into the end zone from a yard out with 2:50 in the first quarter.
Allsop also had a big day defensively, tallying 12 tackles and picking up half a sack. Carter Brooks had eight tackles and 1.5 sacks.
