A video went viral on Sept. 18 of Woods Cross High School’s volleyball team getting a yellow card at a game against Skyline because of the school's student section being too rowdy. There was a five-minute delay with the game as coaches and captains fought against the reason for the call.
Woods Cross strives to uphold a respected level of sportsmanship and camaraderie, focusing on cheering for their team, not criticizing others, or openly calling out the opposing team.
Prior to the call, it appeared that all of these standards were being upheld by the student section. A misunderstanding came about with the popular “six, seven” meme. As the score became six to seven between Woods Cross and Skyline the student section called out those numbers, leading to the referee’s assumption that students were calling out a player on the other team. Once this misunderstanding was clarified it led to a second issue with student backpacks that had been on the floor.
“So, we asked them to lift them up, which was no big deal,” said Nicole Hogan, Woods Cross High School’s volleyball coach. “Then our crowd started cheering and the ref took issue with that, taking it personally, she told my captain they’re cheering against me as the ref, and they were not, they were just trying to have school spirit.”
“I didn’t appreciate how we came to support and then the ref was wanting us to leave,” said Luka Robinson a student at Woods Cross High School.
The student section complained that a yellow card was unnecessary and that a penalty against the team for actions out of their control simply made no sense.
“From there, it just got them more excited and rowdier,” said Hogan. “That propelled us to win the third set. They were the reason we won that.”
“My favorite part of the game was when right after the delay we got loud,” said Beckham Stanger a student at Woods Cross High School. “Then we came back and won the third set then absolutely dominated the four set.”
The Woods Cross student section has an incredible amount of school spirit. They attend and show support to all different sports and bring the same level of enthusiasm to each event.
