In high school football, once October hits, you know the stakes are getting higher.
The state tournament is just a few weeks away, as local teams prepare for the final two games of the regular season. RPI rankings determine playoff seeding, along with where and whom teams will play in the postseason.
With a pair of games to go, a lot can still happen for Davis County teams.
Woods Cross
The Wildcats are 5-3 overall and 2-1 in Region 6, a game behind 3-0 Brighton. In the Class 5A RPI rankings, Woods Cross has a No. 6 ranking.
Woods Cross has a huge game with Olympus – which is also 2-1 in league play – this Thursday. Fortunately for the Wildcats, the contest will be on their home field. Plus, they are coming off their first region loss of the season, so the players should be hungry for redemption in a game that will likely decide which team wins Region 6.
On Oct. 3, Woods Cross came up short against Brighton, falling 28-21 at home. The Wildcats fell in a 14-0 hole halfway through the first quarter and could never recover. In fact, by the 8:48 mark of the third quarter, Brighton held a commanding 28-7 lead.
The Wildcats fought back to get within a touchdown, thanks to a score late in the third quarter and a 3-yard TD run from Viliami Tapa’atoutai a minute into the fourth quarter. However, Woods Cross couldn’t get on the board again, as Brighton held on for the victory.
Bountiful
The defending 5A champs are still in contention for a Region 6 title.
After a slow start to the 2025 season, the Redhawks (4-4 overall) have turned things up a notch. Bountiful was 2-4 after a 28-14 loss to Woods Cross on Sept. 19 in the region opener. But the team has won two in a row, scoring 42 points in both outings.
On the heels of a dominant 42-14 win at Viewmont on Sept. 26, Bountiful outlasted Alta on Oct. 3 by the count of 42-31. The high-scoring game featured 52 points in the first half alone, with Bountiful holding a 28-24 advantage at the break. Bountiful scored 21 points in a lively second quarter, beginning with a 65-yard touchdown run from Siaki Fekitoa. He followed that with a 53-yard TD dash with 1:05 left in the second quarter. Then, with just 18 seconds to play before halftime, and with Alta driving, Aisake Willis intercepted a pass and ran it back 70 yards for a score.
The second half was much quieter but still had some highlights. Fekitoa had this third touchdown of the day when he scored from 8 yards out with 3:24 left in the third quarter. Hudson Malmrose had a 3-yard touchdown run a minute and 13 seconds into the fourth quarter. A successful point after made it 42-24 Bountiful.
Fekitoa had a memorable night.
The senior running back had a season-high 206 yards on 22 carries. His three touchdowns gave him 10 for the season and 46 for his terrific career. Malmrose added 118 yards passing on 10 of 14 completions, while Feller totaled 65 yards and a touchdown on six catches. Defensively, Mason Tidwell had 12 tackles and an interception. Dawson Allsop made 11 stops, and Willis had five tackles to go along with his interception.
The Redhawks can make it three wins in a row this Thursday when they play at Brighton.
Viewmont
The Vikings were 4-1 heading into the region play but are still looking for their first league victory.
Viewmont has had some struggles on both sides of the ball in league play, though the defense put up a valiant fight in the team’s last outing, Oct. 3 at Olympus. That matchup resulted in a 24-0 loss for the Vikings, as they dropped their third contest in a row. The game was just 10-0 heading into the fourth quarter, but Olympus put up 14 points in the final 12 minutes.
Viewmont plays at Alta on Thursday for a chance to end the losing streak and get in the win column in Region 6 action.
Davis and Farmington
The Darts continue to be one of Class 6A’s top teams.
At 7-1 overall, Davis has the No. 3 RPI ranking, behind only Corner Canyon and Skyridge. Most recently, Davis got by Farmington 21-10 on Oct. 4 in a game played at Farmington.
It wasn’t Davis’ most complete offensive outing, though much of that can be attributed to Farmington’s defense. The Phoenix were up 10-7 after one quarter, thanks to an 11-yard TD run by Drew Love and a 40-yard field goal from Jaxon Beynon. Bode Sparrow’s 30-yard touchdown reception from Davis’ star quarterback Tradon Bessinger opened the game’s scoring.
But the Darts played suffocating defense the rest of the way, keeping Farmington off the scoreboard.
In the third quarter, Bessinger and Sparrow connected for the second time of the game, this time from 56 yards out. Thirty-eight seconds into the fourth quarter, Jaxton Itaaheau plunged into the end zone from the 1-yard line. After a successful extra-point kick from Luke Jolley, Davis was ahead 21-10.
Farmington held Davis to just 60 yards on the ground. But it was Bessinger who once again paced the Darts. The senior had 255 yards and two touchdowns on 16 of 23 passing. He completed eight passes to Sparrow for 163 yards. On defense, Ethan Lockwood racked up 18 tackles, while Dexter Frasure had 13 of his own. Johnny Parker had eight tackles and a sack.
Davis plays at Layton on Thursday. Meanwhile, Farmington, now 3-5 on the year (0-2 in Region 1), plays at Syracuse on Friday.
