It wasn’t even close. The Woods Cross Lady Wildcats blew past their competition to win the state high school 5A girls’ tennis championship at Liberty Park on Oct. 11.

Woods Cross finished with 70 points, winning every match except one final, to easily outdistance itself from second place Hillcrest, which finished with 37 points. By advancing all of its singles players and both doubles teams into the finals, the Cats had the title locked down quickly and relatively easily.

In first singles, freshman Lyla Berguson beat Luciana Gonzales of Hillcrest 6-2 6-2. It continued a Berguson family tradition of winning state titles, and she’s just starting her high school career.

In second singles, senior Ruby Robbins beat Hillcrest’s Joshua Yerrapureddy 6-3 3-2, after the Hillcrest player retired in the second set. In third singles, Woods Cross senior Kate Schanz reached the finals before losing to Hillcrest sophomore Nivedita Bakski 6-3 6-4. But after that, the doubles teams breezed to wins for Woods Cross.

In first doubles, senior Sydney Kemp and sophomore Lila Johnson beat Malah Crandall and Natalie Nobuhara of Maple Mountain 7-5 6-2. In second doubles, Wildcat juniors Lillie Bennion and Liza Eyring trounced Springville’s Avery Parker and Caroline Felix 6-1 6-1.

Bountiful scored seven points, with first round wins by sophomore Lola Sulser beating Salem’s Katie Barton 6-4 6-2 in first singles, sophomore Layla Stevenson beating Kate Barton of Salem 6-4 6-2 in second singles, and freshman Eve Willis beating Jordin Madsen of Clearfield 6-3 6-2.

In first doubles, the sophomore team of Violet Madsen and Kate Wolfgramm bested  Alyssa Sanders and Gracie Harding of Hunter 6-2 6-2, and in second doubles, it was Bountiful’s Beatrice Richards (senior) and Emery Barnett (sophomore) downing Celine Sanders and Kylee Brooks of Hunter 6-1 6-0.

Viewmont’s only team point came in first singles, where senior Sophia Robinson won a first-round match over Sofia Stahle of Skyline 6-0-6-3.
