Just like that, the fall sports season is starting to wind down.
For both Viewmont and Woods Cross, the girls soccer seasons are over, as the two schools finished challenging campaigns with early exits from the Class 5A state tournament.
Viewmont
The Vikings drew a familiar foe in the first round of the state tournament on Oct. 9, and the third time wasn’t the charm.
Viewmont, seeded 23rd, played at 10th seed Brighton, a team it had already fallen to twice during the regular season. Brighton won in a shootout on Sept. 2 and then edged the Vikings 2-1 on Sept. 25 on Viewmont’s home field. But this postseason matchup was a different story.
Brighton jumped out to a 2-0 halftime advantage and then added a second-half goal to blank the Vikings 3-0. It was the ninth time this season that Viewmont was on the wrong end of a shutout.
With the season-ending defeat, Viewmont’s 2025 record stood at 5-14 overall and 4-8 in Region 6 in Alexis Peterson-Green’s first season as head coach. The Vikings struggled offensively this season and were led by Lucy Layton’s three goals. Lucy Morris and Talley Smith added two goals apiece. Smith also had a team-high six assists. The good news is that Layton is just a freshman, so Viewmont should have her services and talents for three more years. Goalkeeper Susan Lamb had three shutouts in her final season on the team.
Woods Cross
The Wildcats’ season mirrored Viewmont’s in many ways, including their record. Like the Vikings, Woods Cross had a 4-8 mark in Region 6 and finished 5-14 overall. The Wildcats also had a quick postseason exit.
On Oct. 9, Woods Cross traveled to Wasatch to face a challenging foe. Woods Cross had an excellent start to the match, gaining a 1-0 halftime lead. It was a good sign for Woods Cross, which had been playing admirably lately, going 3-3 in its last six games entering the playoffs. Even the team’s recent losses had been close.
But the second half of the first-round playoff game didn’t go so well for Woods Cross.
Wasatch scored three goals after halftime to win 3-1 and put an end to the Wildcats’ season. It was the second year in a row that Woods Cross lost in the first round of the state tournament. The last time the team advanced in the playoffs was 2023 when it got to the second round only to lose to Wasatch by the same 3-1 score it suffered this season.
On the year, senior midfielder Nixon Milliron had a stellar performance. She led the team in both scoring and assists with seven apiece. She finished her career at Woods Cross with 15 goals and 10 assists. Meanwhile, sophomore Lily Garff and junior Clara Howes each had four goals. Junior goalkeeper Kacey Durtschi posted a shutout.
The Wildcats return a strong core of experienced players for 2026 but also must replace some starters and other key contributors at important positions on the field.
