The next few weeks will determine the next champion in Class 6A of Utah high school football. While many teams have an uphill battle to get to the championship, every school has a shot at the top prize.
Davis
The Darts enter the 6A state tournament seeded third after having won Region 1 with an impressive 4-0 record. Overall, Davis is 9-1, with its only loss coming in week two against former Region 1 foe Fremont. Since that contest, the Darts have reeled off eight wins in a row, each by at least 11 points.
In the regular-season finale, Davis clinched the Region 1 crown with a 38-23 victory at home over Weber. The dominant win wasn’t as close as the final score indicated. The Darts were up 35-6 after three quarters.
Tradon Bessinger threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns on 26 of 37 passing. His favorite target was Jaxton Itaaheau, who caught 11 balls for 109 yards and a score. Tyson Baggett had seven catches for 70 yards and a touchdown, while Bode Sparrow contributed five grabs for 90 yards and a TD. Itaaheau paced the Darts on the ground too, churning out 121 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.
The defense was solid as well, with Dexter Frasure making 12 tackles and Sparrow tacking on 11. During the regular season, Davis gave up just 195 points – less than 20 a game.
Davis will host Bingham on Halloween in its opening state playoff game. The Miners are 3-6 overall and finished in the middle of the pack in Region 2. With a victory, the Darts would play the winner of sixth-seeded Lone Peak and 11th-seeded Farmington in the quarterfinals on Nov. 7.
The postseason will also be a chance for Bessinger to pad his impressive stats. The senior quarterback has 3,587 yards and 44 touchdowns on 267 completions. He completed 75% of his passes during the regular season and threw just two interceptions. For his career, Bessinger has thrown for an eye-popping 10,183 yards and 118 touchdowns.
Farmington
The Phoenix could potentially meet up with Davis once again, if Farmington manages an upset of Lone Peak on Oct. 31 and if the Darts prevail against Bingham. On Oct. 4, Davis got by Farmington 21-10.
This regular season, Farmington was .500 in region play and overall – 2-2 in league games and 5-5 in all its matchups.
Farmington ended the regular season on a high note, defeating Layton on the road by the count of 26-10 on Oct. 15. Farmington grabbed a 17-3 halftime lead and never was threatened the rest of the way.
Drew Love was the start for the Phoenix.
Love, a senior running back, tallied 156 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 26 carries. He also had two catches for 24 yards. His totals upped his season numbers to 1,247 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground and 244 yards on 34 catches. In the season finale, quarterback Will Peterson had 131 yards passing and a TD. The senior quarterback has just shy of 1,900 passing this season.
