The Davis High School football team is two games away from playing for the Class 6A state title.
First, the Darts have to get past a perennial power.
Davis faces Lone Peak on Friday in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. Fortunately for Davis, it hosts the always-tough Knights in a contest that will determine which team moves to the semifinals on Nov. 14.
To get to the quarterfinals, Davis took care of Bingham in impressive fashion.
Playing at home in the second round on Halloween afternoon, third-seeded Davis 42-21 to improve to 10-1 on the year. Davis scored in every quarter, getting 14 points in both the second and third quarters. Quarterback Tradon Bessinger had a hand—literally—in every Darts’ touchdown. The senior signal-caller tossed six touchdowns in the game, three to Isaac Morrison (36 yards, 2 yards and 69 yards). In all, Bessinger threw for 391 yards on 27 of 37 passing. Bessinger now has 50 touchdown passes this season and 124 for his career.
Against Bingham, two Darts topped 120 yards receiving. Morrison had seven catches for 142 yards, while Jaxton Itaaheau had eight catches for 122 yards. Tyson Baggett grabbed six balls for 67 yards. Davis only had nine rushing plays, with Makaio Byrd pacing the team with 47 yards on five carries. Bridger Young was all of the field on defense, totaling 17 tackles. Teammates Ethan Lockwood and Johnny Parker had 15 and 13 tackles, respectively. Sparrow had few plays off, as he supplemented his offensive totals with 14 stops on defense. Connor Brown had an interception in the victory.
Davis hopes to get over the hump against Lone Peak.
The Darts have lost in the state quarterfinals each of the last three seasons. Davis last reached the state semifinals in 2009. That season, Davis lost in the 5A state championship game to Bingham.
If Davis wins its quarterfinals matchup with Lone Peak, it would face the winner of Sky Ridge and American Fork in the semifinals.
Farmington
The Phoenix finished their season with a 5-6 record, falling in the second round at Lone Peak, 41-14, on Oct. 31. Farmington had an identical record in 2024 when it also lost in the second round of the 6A state tournament.
In the second-round loss to Lone Peak, Farmington got down early and couldn’t recover. The Phoenix were down 14-0 after one quarter and 26-7 at halftime. Farmington’s lone touchdown in the first half was a 1-yard run from Drew Love with 5:10 to play in the second quarter. Love added a second touchdown, a 2-yarder with 6:50 in the game. However, by that time, Lone Peak had already racked up 41 points.
Will Peterson led the way for the Phoenix with 175 yards passing. He completed five passes to Kava Fiefia for 35 yards and had four completions to both Tanner Nielsen (56 yards) and Chase Hamlin (46 yards). Love had 27 yards rushing to go along with his two touchdowns. Kash Taylor and Fiefia paced the team with nine tackles apiece.
