Region play looms as Bountiful girls basketball looks to build off strong start

The new-look Region 6 isn’t going to waste time tipping of league games. League action begins in mid-December, with local teams Bountiful, Woods Cross and Viewmont eager to prove themselves against some new foes.

So far, Bountiful is looking like it could contend in the region.

The Redhawks, coming off a terrific 24-2 state championship-winning season a year ago, are 4-1 so far in 2025–26.

Bountiful had to replace some key pieces of last year’s Class 5A championship team. But other talented players came back, and the Redhawks could once again be a force in the 5A race. The Redhawks’ lone defeat through five games was a 59-45 setback at home to Cedar Valley on Nov. 25. In that contest, Bountiful was up 13-4 after one quarter but was outscored 55-32 the rest of the way.

However, the Redhawks haven’t dropped any other contests, and they were dominant in their last game, a 69-43 blasting of Payson. Both teams hit eight free throws, but Bountiful made 10 more shots from the floor and drained nine three-pointers to just three by Payson. Milika Satuala scored 25 points for Bountiful to lead the way. Maleah Nelson connected on four three-pointers and tallied 18 points.

Bountiful plays at Maple Mountain on Dec. 9 and then hosts Woods Cross on Dec. 12 in the first league matchup.

Woods Cross

Speaking of the Wildcats, they are an even 2-2 through four games. The last time Woods Cross was on the court, it routed Murray 55-35 at home on Dec. 2.

Ili Crocket had 16 points to pace Woods Cross in the victory over Murray, while Andia Cook added 13 points. The 20-point win was a nice rebound from a tough 49-38 loss at Riverton two days before Thanksgiving.

The Wildcats have gotten solid efforts from Crocket, a senior guard, and Zoe Michaels, a sophomore forward. The pair averages 11 and 10 points a game, respectively. Crocket’s 6.8 rebounds a game also leads the team.

Woods Cross faced Northridge on the road on Dec. 4 in a contest that took place after our press time. The Wildcats then hosted Roy on Dec. 5 and played at West Field on Dec. 9 before their matchup with Bountiful.

Viewmont

The Vikings were 1-2 heading into a tournament game against Hunter on Dec. 4. Viewmont has faced some tough foes, including Bingham, which handed the Vikings a humbling 58-26 loss on Nov. 25.

The Vikings began the season with a 57-53 win at Salem Hills, led by Peyton Burningham’s 19 points. Kailey Selleneit contributed 13 points, while Susan Lamb and Mille Egnew each had nine points. Egnew pulled down 10 rebounds, and Annie Layton dished out nine assists.

Burningham, a senior, is the leader for Viewmont in points with an average of 10 a game. Selleneit scores nine points a game, with Layton close behind with 7.7 points each outing.

The Vikings open region play Dec. 16 at home against Brighton. Before that game, however, Viewmont has a few non-league matchups, including a home game with Northridge on Dec. 10 and a game at Herriman on Dec. 11.
