Follow your passion or follow the money?

The dreaded college search, a moment most high school seniors put off until the last second. I’ve found myself in the same situation, it’s not that I don’t want to go to college, it’s about choosing what I want to study. Each college has different programs, making some colleges a better fit for a student than others.
Over the course of the last four months, I have been an intern at the Davis Journal. I was able to write articles and attend events in the community. This opportunity allowed me to learn how to interview and quote someone correctly for a newspaper article. It was challenging at the beginning, as a high school senior the majority of my background knowledge is within research essays. While there are some similarities, I had to learn how to format an article designed for people in the community to read.
As my senior year comes to a close, I am being pressured to decide on my career and what I want to pursue in college. There are so many things to factor in when making this decision. Things like how much will I need to make to live the life I want to? Where do I want to go to school? What am I passionate about? The list is very long, making this decision incredibly overwhelming.
In today’s society, being passionate about your job isn’t realistic anymore. The majority of people work to make money so they can pursue their passion. Unfortunately, I don’t think many accountants are passionate about numbers, but they do make enough money to do the things they want to do. Which makes me question, is it worth being passionate about my job if I am barely able to make enough money to live the life I want, or do I want to find my passion outside of my job?
This internship has helped me make some of those decisions. For the last year or so, I have wanted to pursue an education in English after high school. I hope to pursue a career in book publishing. The only downside to this is that this field is difficult to break into. I am passionate about English literature, and I think that is something hard to find outside of a career. I have decided to take this risk and follow my passion into a career.
