Work has been completed on a mural painted on the side of the building at 10 South Main Street in North Salt Lake, across the street from Hatch Park. The mural is the first piece in the North Salt Lake Arts Committee's mural program, an initiative to brighten and beautify urban centers and surround residents’ daily life with art. It was dedicated in a ceremony during the city’s Winter Lights Festival Dec. 1.

The mural, located on the side of the former Bamberger Hotel, was conceived of and painted by Jean Montanaro, a resident of North Salt Lake. The mural was composed out of two works of art by the recently deceased David Montanaro, the father of Jean and a local artist. The pieces were projected onto the exterior wall and then blocked in with a stencil. As a final protective the mural was coated in a layer of anti-graffiti surfactant.

Montanaro reported that during the process of painting the mural many North Salt Lake residents stopped and commented on how much joy the art was giving them. Sherrie Pace, the Community Development Director, said she is excited for the mural program to continue and the North Salt Lake public to enjoy the beautiful work of art.

In conjunction with North Salt Lake’s Winter Lights Festival, a dedicatory celebration was held to introduce the public to the Montanaro's mural. Jean and her mother, Sheila, introduced the piece of work, and spoke about its inception, and their hope that it will lift the spirits of the community. North Salt Lake Mayor Brian Horrocks presided over the event.

Coming soon is a website that will share the mural’s history, and include links to the Montanaro family’s artistic work.
