LAYTON—After winning Food Network’s “Cake Wars,” Megan Faulker Brown decided to build on that success by opening her own bakery shop, The Sweet Tooth Fairy. Brown opened several bakeries including one in Layton.

 The Layton location has been a favorite spot for sweets lovers but that will come to an end on Dec. 27 when the store shuts its doors and moves some of its products online.

The Sweet Tooth Fairy chain became a franchise and a local couple became franchisees for the Layton store in 2018. 

“When we heard about the franchise my husband and I decided to do it,” said Stefani Jones. “It’s a fun, fun area to be in and a great community. I’m from Davis County.”

The retail store has the popular cakebites, said Jones. They’re like cake pops but the bite came before that. We also do wedding cakes and have a variety of cupcakes, cookies, candies and cookie dough you can take home and bake yourself.”

Jones said she started out baking at home before they bought the franchise. “I mostly baked for friends and family and made wedding cakes.”

Now she’s turned that over to some bakers at the shop. “We have a part-time crew that comes in from 7-8 in the morning to prep treats for the afternoon and also prep for the next day. We have a great manager who runs it for us. I go in once a week or so.”

Several shops are closing, not just the Layton location. “Sometimes the lease goes up,” said Jones. “Costs have risen and they can’t handle any more. It’s not profitable.”

Jones said many of the shop’s products will still be available online. “We’ll be continuing to offer lolly pops candy, cookies – things that can be shipped.”

Now and before the stop closes, Jones said customers can stop by and get treats for Christmas. “We have a lot of treats that freeze well. We’ll be stocked for Christmas with all of our normal stuff. We’ll also be selling some decorations, and probably some apothecary jars.”

The shop has been a special place for the community, she said. “ Lots of people hang out and get a treat. They bring grandma for a treat. Lots of people come in to celebrate their anniversary with the flavor of their wedding cake.”

The Sweet Tooth Fairy shop is located at 2065 N. Harris Blvd, Layton and open from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, closed Sunday.
