Since its creation in December 2024, the City of North Salt Lake Arts Committee has strived to bring art and culture to the city. During the City Council meeting on Nov. 21, Sherrie Page, Community Development Director and a member of the committee, presented the groups hopes and plans for 2026 and beyond.
A major source of excitement for the Arts Committee is the mural program. The first of the murals is on the side of the former Bamberger Hotel at 10 South Main Street. It was painted by Jean Montanaro and dedicated during the Winter Lights Festival on Dec. 1. Two murals will be painted in the town center over the course of 2026. Financially the murals are being covered by $10,000 that has been allocated from the city council’s budget for the program and a grant of $4,250 from the Discover Davis tourism board. Furthermore, the arts committee received $5,000 from an anonymous donor expressly for the murals.
Throughout the process of the renovation on Hatch Park, the Arts Committee has been working with the landscape architect in charge of the project in order to create space in the park for public art. The public works of art suggested for presentation in Hatch Park included statues, oversized chairs, tokens made from the wood of trees that have been removed from the park. The tree’s wood could also be carved into benches and swings by a willing unnamed local artist.
The Arts Committee has identified other sites throughout the city for the placements of artistic works; these include the monuments at the entrances to the City, City Hall and Town Center, Veteran's Memorial Plaza, Eagleridge roundabout, Foxboro Drive roundabout, and Eaglewood Golf Course.
Another project they are looking to implement is bringing the Art Around the Corner to North Salt Lake. This is an event held by the St. George-based organization, the Art Around the Corner Foundation, in which artists display their art for purchase or a lease at 10 percent of the cost.
The arts committee is also running the NSL Reads program. NSL Reads is a yearly initiative that holds a writing contest for local creatives and hosts a published author who will speak at the city’s elementary schools. The theme for the year will be revealed on Jan. 5, 2026 and will conclude on March 5, 2026 with a night of readings, activities and treats.
On the business side, an additional goal of the arts committee is to set up a 501(c) (3) so they can correctly accept monetary donations. The anonymous donation greatly heartened Page and strengthens a belief that residents of North Salt Lake will generously support the arts. The 501 (c)(3) will make it tax deductible for donors.
The arts committee is extremely keen to get North Salt Lake residents involved in the local arts and keep them informed about events. A website dedicated to the arts committee and North Salt Lake arts projects will be going live some time in 2026.
“The Arts Committee is on fire,” said Lisa Watts Baskin during the presentation. “I’m so excited about all the new ideas and the creatives coming together.”
