The Bountiful girls basketball team is competing in a new region this season, but the Redhawks continue to be dominant.
It doesn’t seem to matter what the competition is, Bountiful can’t be stopped in league play.
A year after finishing 14-0 in Region 5, the Redhawks are off to a 4-0 start in Region 6. In fact, Bountiful hasn’t lost a region game since Feb. 16, 2021, and has won an astonishing 53 league games in a row.
The three-time defending Class 5A champions haven’t had any trouble in league action, winning its first four games by at least 26 points each. In most instances, Bountiful has dominated the opening tip, not letting the opponent have much of a chance to stay close.
In its latest conquest, Bountiful routed Viewmont 76-44 on Jan. 13. The Redhawks were already up 25-9 after one quarter and 44-21 at halftime. Milika Satuala torched Viewmont with 36 points on the day, hitting three three-pointers. Brynna Castleton had a strong game, tallying 16 points, while Bailee Gilsen had 10 points. The Redhawks played stifling defense, limiting Viewmont to 30% shooting from the field.
Bountiful took care of Brighton on Jan. 9, blowing out the Bengals 65-34 on the road. After building a 34-20 halftime lead, Bountiful erased any chance of a Brighton comeback by outscoring the Bengals 21-4 in the third quarter. Satuala had 27 points and seven rebounds, with Charlotte Johnson matching Satuala’s rebounding total, while adding 10 points.
Bountiful is now 13-1 overall and plays at Olympus on Friday before returning home on Jan. 20 to face Alta.
Woods Cross
The 7-7 Wildcats sit in fourth place in Region 6 with a 2-2 mark. The Wildcats, however, have won their last two region games.
On Jan. 13, Wood Cross edged Brighton 63-59 for a key win. The back-and-forth game saw the Wildcats lead 21-10 after one quarter but find themselves in a tight 30-29 game at halftime. After a 20-12 advantage in quarter No. 3, the Wildcats held on for the four-point victory. Pacing Woods Cross was senior guard Ili Crocket, who had 25 points. Adia Cook and Mersadie Carroll had 16 points and 12 points, respectively.
On Jan. 6, Woods Cross played fantastic defense in a convincing 55-25 win over Skyline on the road. The Wildcats held Skyline to just 11 points in the first half and followed up that performance by shutting out the Eagles in the third quarter. Crocket scored a game-high 18 points in the win. Meanwhile, three Wildcat players had double-digit rebounding performances, with Zoe Michaelis (11), Lucy Thompson (10) and Reese Tanner (10) dominating the boards. Thompson added 13 points, while Carroll had 12 points of her own.
Woods Cross hosts Viewmont on Friday and then plays at Olympus on Jan. 20.
Viewmont
The Vikings have had some struggles this season in a 4-11 campaign. The team is 1-3 in league play heading into its contest with Woods Cross on Friday.
Kailey Selleneit is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 11.8 points a game, with Peyton Burningham tallying 7.8 points an outing. They were the top scorers in Viewmont’s 76-44 defeat at the hands of Bountiful on Jan. 13, registering 10 and nine points, respectively.
Viewmont gave Olympus a tough game on Jan. 9, falling 58-50 on the road. The Vikings looked poised for an upset of the 11-2 Titans, leading 41-39 after three quarters. But Olympus went on a 19-9 run in the fourth quarter to prevent the upset. Selleneit had a big game in defeat, posting 19 points (while hitting five three-pointers), pulling down eight rebounds and collecting four steals. Annie Layton added 16 points and five steals, while Burningham scored nine points and had eight rebounds.
After facing Woods Cross, Viewmont has a winnable game at Skyline on Jan. 20.
Davis
Class 6A’s Davis had some highs and lows in non-region play, but the Darts are off to a 2-0 start in Region 6.
Now, at 9-6 overall, Davis has some momentum, having won both league games by double digits.
The Darts handled Weber at home on Jan. 9 by the count of 47-37 and followed this with a solid 56-36 victory over Farmington on Jan. 13. The low-scoring win over Weber featured a defensive effort from Davis in which it allowed just 10 field goals the entire game. Davis prevailed despite struggling from the foul line, going 7–15. Kate Willard had a stat-stuffing effort, totaling 16 points, five rebounds and five steals. Lydia Tarbet and Hannah Garlock – who had 15 points between them – each had five steals as well, as the Darts collected an impressive 22 steals in all.
Davis outscored Farmington 34-21 in the teams’ matchup, with Willard leading the way with 13 points. Cambell Christensen scored 12 points, and Davis hit eight three-pointers to Farmington’s two.
The Darts step out of region play this Friday for a game at home against Maple Mountain. This precedes a home game with Layton on Jan. 20.
Farmington
Farmington’s loss to Davis on Jan. 13 was the team’s region opener. The Phoenix are 9-5 overall and play at Layton on Friday. Following that road contest, Farmington entertains Syracuse on Feb. 20.
The Phoenix are on a two-game skid, with both losses coming in blowout fashion. However, before these setbacks, the Phoenix had won four of its previous five outings.
Farmington has a deep bench, as head coach Tara Ferrin has given numerous players the opportunity to play. A total of 16 players have seen the court in varsity games for Farmington, with Ellie Dorius pacing the squad with a 10-point average.
