The Darts are picking a good time to get on a roll.

The Davis boys basketball team is 5-1 in Region 1, tied with Layton for the top spot in the league. Overall, Davis is 14-6 and has posted back-to-back victories entering its Feb. 6 contest with Timpanogos, a non-region matchup. On Feb. 10, the Darts have an enormous game at Layton, which will likely decide which of the two squads captures the region crown.

On Jan. 30, Davis took down Weber by the score of 63-56 in a big road victory. Davis had to fend off a hearty challenge from Weber, which wouldn’t go away after the Darts got up by 11 points at halftime. Davis struggled from the floor, shooting 18 of 52. However, 11 of the Darts’ 18 field goals were from behind the three-point line, compared to seven three-pointers from Weber. Dilan Peterson hit six of those long-range shots for Davis, accounting for all 18 of his points. The leading scorer for Davis on the night was JT Turley, who poured in 21 points, including four three-pointers. Bode Sparrow scored 15 points and added five rebounds and four assists in the win.

Most recently, on Feb. 3, the Darts outlasted Farmington by the count of 67-63. Playing in front of its home crowd, Davis got up big at halftime, 43-27. However, Farmington roared back, thanks to a 24-14 run in the third quarter. The Darts held on, benefitting from 52% shooting from the floor. Sparrow paced Davis with 24 points. He also collected five rebounds. Turley chipped in 16 points and dished out six assists, while Tradon Bessinger had 15 points and seven rebounds.

After the Darts face off with Layton, they finish the regular season on Feb. 13 against Syracuse at home. Currently, Davis holds the third spot in the Class 6A RPI rankings.

Farmington

The Phoenix more than held their own in the close loss to Davis. It was a far cry from the 57-37 defeat Farmington suffered at home to Davis in the two teams’ previous meeting this season, on Jan. 13.

Farmington is 2-3 in Region 1 and 11-9 overall. The team has a home game with Layton on Feb. 6, followed by a Feb. 10 contest at Syracuse.

Against Davis on Feb. 3, Farmington got a big game from sophomore center Jack Layton. The big man scored 20 points on the night, eight more than teammates Isaac Anderson and Brycen Rudolph, who also scored in double figures. It was Layton’s 14th game this season scoring at least 10 points.

On Jan. 27, Farmington had a non-region game at home against Region 3 opponent Lehi. The Phoenix fell 78-70, despite hitting one more shot from the floor than the Pioneers. However, Lehi outshot Farmington eight to five from three-point land, essentially accounting for the margin of victory. Malakai Tobler had the high-point game for Farmington, tallying 18 points. Rudolph and Layton each scored 14 points, while Anderson had 11 points.

Farmington is a ways back in the RPI rankings, sitting at No. 11.

Bountiful

In Class 5A, Bountiful is rated fifth in the RPI rankings, a strong showing in a loaded classification. The Redhawks are 7-4 in league play, trailing only Highland and Olympus, which are ranked second and third, respectively in 5A.

The Redhawks are 14-6 overall and have won four of their last five games heading into a clash with Viewmont on Feb. 6 at home. The only setback in that five games was a 59-52 loss to Highland.

Most recently on Feb. 3, Bountiful blew out Brighton 64-44 in a game that wasn’t even that close. The Redhawks were up 29-13 after one half and 56-26 entering the fourth and final quarter. Bountiful hit 11 three-pointers, nine more than Brighton. Lincoln Smith scored 18 points (including four three-pointers), and Davey Howe contributed 11. Bountiful got points from eight other players in a well-balanced effort.

In a Jan. 30 loss to Highland by the score of 59-52, Bountiful hung tough, thanks largely to the efforts of Howe, Smith and Aisake Wilis, who combined for 38 points. Howe had a team-high 14 points and added four rebounds.

The Redhawks can climb higher in the league standings with home games with Viewmont and Olympus coming up on Feb. 6 and Feb. 10, respectively.

Woods Cross

The Wildcats have shot up the standings with three wins in a row—including a stunning 64-48 triumph over Highland on Feb. 3.

The Wildcats improved to 7-4 in Region 6 and 13-7 overall with the upset over the Rams, just their third defeat of the season. Woods Cross went into the halftime locker room knotted up with Highland, 27-27.

The second half was nearly perfect for the Wildcats.

Woods Cross outscored Highland 16-7 in the third quarter and 21-14 in the fourth quarter. Only five Wildcats scored in the game, but four of them hit double figures in points. Elliot Bendinger led the way with 18 points, with Madden Johnson adding 15 points. Bryson Watson scored 14 points, and Marcus Stepan had 10 points. A 16–19 effort from the foul line helped the Wildcats pull off the memorable victory.

Woods Cross is 11th in the 5A RPI rankings. The team has three more regular-season games, beginning with a Feb. 6 home game with Brighton.

Viewmont

The Vikings, 4-7 in Region 6 and 9-12 overall, have had some struggles this season. Viewmont has three more games to add to its win total and build some momentum for the state tournament.

Viewmont’s last outing was a 69-56 defeat at home to Olympus. The Vikings were down by just four points at halftime to the perennial state powers. Tyson Bromley paced Viewmont with 17 points, while Carson Tovey had 14 points. Brett Tovey contributed 14 points. Both Toveys had five rebounds.

The Vikings play at Bountiful on Feb. 6 and then host Woods Cross on Feb. 10.
