Girls basketball: Redhawks fall in 5A semifinals; Darts reach quarterfinals in 6A

The Bountiful girls basketball team has dominated the Class 5A ranks for the past four seasons, but the 2025–26 campaign didn’t end quite the way the Redhawks had hoped.

Bountiful cruised to a 21-2 regular-season record, winning another Region 5 title in the process. The Redhawks grabbed the No. 2 seed in the 5A state tournament, and it looked like the team was poised to win the state championship once again. Bountiful had claimed the previous three state crowns, putting together one of the most impressive runs in recent Utah high school girls basketball.

But West High School had other plans.

The Panthers, out of Region 4, defeated Bountiful 52-48 in the state semifinals, Feb. 26 at the University of Utah. And it took extra time to end the Redhawks’ season.

Bountiful overcame a 30-14 halftime deficit and outscored West 33-17 in the second half to force an overtime period. However, in the overtime session, the Redhawks managed just a single free throw, while West scored five points. Bountiful struggled from the floor, hitting 35% percent of its shots. Milika Satuala had a brilliant game in defeat. The senior guard scored a game-high 32 points and added seven rebounds and seven steals. She also drilled five three-pointers. No other Redhawks scored in double figures.

The bitter loss may have ended the program’s string of three state titles in a row, but the Redhawks still put together a stellar campaign. The Redhawks completed their fifth consecutive 20-win season. In this season’s state tournament, Bountiful won its second-round playoff game (after a first-round bye) on Feb. 19 over Timpview by the count of 51-38. This preceded a quarterfinals blowout at home over Maple Mountain on Feb. 23, 60-35.

In the second round, Satuala scored 21 points and had six rebounds, while Maleah Nelson scored 12 and Charlotte Johnson chipped in 10 points. In the quarterfinals victory, Bountiful surrendered just 12 first-half points and got 28 points from Satuala and 13 points from Adelaide Stevenson. Satuala also pulled down nine rebounds and had three assists and five steals.

Davis

In the Class 6A ranks, Davis placed second in Region 1 with a 6-2 mark. The Darts finished the season with a 16-9 overall record and reached the quarterfinals of the state tournament, thanks to a close home win in round two.

In the second round on Feb. 19, the Darts, seeded eighth in the playoffs, outlasted ninth-seeded American Fork 44-40.

Davis hit 18 free throws to American Fork’s nine and got double-figures in scoring from a pair of players. Kate Willard paced the team with 18 points, while Lydia Tarbet contributed 11 points. Chole Peery was close behind with eight points. The win earned Davis a trip to the quarterfinals against a formidable foe: top-seeded Westlake.

In the quarterfinals matchup, held on Westlake’s home floor on Feb. 25, Davis’ season came to an end. Westlake’s defense overwhelmed the Darts, allowing just eight points in the first half. Davis managed 25 points after halftime but couldn’t overcome a 16-point hole. Davis struggled shooting the ball, hitting only 10 field goals on 39 attempts. Willard led all scorers in the game with 17 points. She, along with Peery, had six rebounds in the loss.
