At the halfway point of the region season, Viewmont is the clear leader in Region 6. The Vikings haven’t just been tough to beat; they’ve beat dominant.
Viewmont won its first seven league games, all by at least three runs. Four of the victories came by shutout during a consecutive stretch from March 26 to April 14. Win No. 4 was especially satisfying for the Vikings: a 7-0 blanking of Bountiful.
In the contest between the Davis County foes, Viewmont allowed just a single hit, with pitcher London Dickerson striking out 10 Bountiful batters. Viewmont scored two runs in the first, third and fifth innings and never allowed the Redhawks to get on the board. Ricki Smith had a big day for the Vikings, hitting a double and a triple. Marlee Moser, Olivia McGarvey and Peyton Burningham each drove in a run.
Bountiful fell to 4-3 in region play with the loss but got a solid game from pitcher Dylan Carpenter, who had six strikeouts, and Brenna Wentworth, who recorded a double from the plate.
Viewmont followed the victory with a 10-4 non-region win over Cyprus on April 15, improving to 11-5 overall. Six of Viewmont’s 10 runs came in the seventh and final inning. Meanwhile, the Vikings did just enough defensively in the bottom of the seventh to stave off a Cyprus rally, which had three runs in its final at-bat. McGarvey hit a home run and had two RBI for Viewmont. Dickerson hit a double, and Betty Cluff brought in two runs.
Viewmont faces Alta on the road in a key region game on April 21. Bountiful will try to move up the standings on April 20 when it plays at Olympus, which currently sits in second place behind the Vikings.
Davis
The Darts have made life difficult for a pair of region opponents. In winning its first five games in Region 1, Davis has gone 3-0 over Syracuse and 2-0 over Layton, with a game against the Lancers coming up on Friday. Davis has scored at least nine runs in every league contest so far and has not allowed more than five runs. In fact, all season, Davis has given up just 36 runs while amassing a 14-1 overall record.
The pitching has been fantastic for the Darts.
On April 14, Davis blanked Layton 10-0 in a game that went just four innings. During that time, pitcher Serena Roth didn’t allow a single hit and retired 13 batters. The following day, Roth struck out two batters and allowed just four hits in a 15-0 victory over Layton. From the plate, Viewmont was equally as devastating, recording 19 hits in the second game with Layton and nine hits the game before. In the April 15 blowout, nine Davis players had at least one RBI, and four players hit doubles, with Cambell Christensen hitting two. Hadley Crowley hit a triple.
After Davis’ game with Layton on Friday, the Darts will play at Box Elder in a non-region game on Saturday. Next week, a critical three-game series with Farmington begins with an April 21 meeting.
Farmington
The Phoenix are hanging right with Davis, sporting a 3-0 mark in region play. It has been a nice turnaround for the team, which is 7-10 overall.
Farmington swept a three-game series with Weber this week, including winning a pair over the Warriors on April 15. Game one went down to the wire, resulting in a 6-5 Farmington victory. Game two was more decisive, with the Phoenix prevailing 10-3. Lill Topham was the winning pitcher in both wins, striking out six batters in the first victory, followed by another six in game two. Sophia Strong was the offensive star in the second win, hitting a double and racking up four RBI.
The Phoenix also defeated Weber 7-5 on April 14, thanks largely to Morgan Rogers and Kiley Gazafy, who each hit a home run. Rogers also had two RBI, and Strong brought in three batters of her own. Ruby Andrus and Taylor Adams hit doubles.
The trio of wins over Weber were a nice shift in momentum for Farmington, which had lost five games in a row heading into the series.
Woods Cross
Back in Region 4, Woods Cross is holding its own with a 4-4 mark in league play. The Wildcats are now 6-11 overall.
Woods Cross hosts Mountain on Friday in a non-region game. The Wildcats split a pair of region contests this week, beating Brighton 11-1 on April 14 and falling to Alta in a wild offensive showdown on April 15 by the high score of 16-15.
In defeating Brighton, Woods Cross pitcher Bree Benson struck out 10 batters and didn’t allow any hits. The Wildcats had eight runs in the fourth inning alone and was up by enough after five innings for the game to end via the mercy rule. Sadie Wall hit a home run and had three RBI in a terrific individual performance. Baia Hemos had two RBI, as did Benson, who also hit a double.
The loss to Alta was a heartbreaker, as Wood Cross led 15-14 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning before allowing a pair of runs. Wall hit a double and drove in five runs, while Benson recorded a double and had three RBI. Whitney Winegar also smacked a double for the Wildcats.
The next Region 6 matchup for Woods Cross is on April 21 when the Wildcats face Skyline.
