Bomb technicians successfully dispose of explosives found in West Bountiful neighborhood

Residents in West Bountiful were allowed to return to their homes at approximately 12:10 p.m. April 27 after a mandatory evacuation was issued by Public Safety Officers related to explosive material found at a residence near 1100 West and 1400 North. As a precaution residents who lived within 2,000 feet of the area were asked to evacuate during the disposal process.

West Bountiful Police Officers found the explosive material April 25 while investigating another call, a police department release said.

Responders from the South Davis Metro Fire District and the Davis County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad determined that the explosive material was believed to include dynamite.

The area was secured by West Bountiful Police Officers while technicians from the Davis County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad evaluated the explosives, the release said. Technicians took steps from April 25 through April 27 to stabilize the material for safe disposal due to the age and condition of the material.

Bomb Technicians successfully disposed of all explosives at the scene and currently there are no public safety concerns, police said.

According to the West Bountiful Police Department a county emergency alert system that broadcasted the message to cell phones and emails was sent in a larger radius than intended. The alert process is being reviewed by County Emergency Management to prevent confusion in the future.

Dwayne Raymond Hughes was booked into the Davis County Jail on Sunday night for investigation of possessing explosives, unlawful possession of fireworks and reckless endangerment.

An investigation into the circumstances related to the explosives is underway.
