The high school track and field season will come to a close on May 14-16 when state finals are held at BYU. Last weekend, the BYU Invite, which serves as a preview of state events, was held on the Provo campus.
Viewmont’s boys were the top local team, finishing 12th. They were led by senior Jordan Jensen who took second in the 400 meters, and sophomore Cash Hawkins, who took sixth in the javelin. He teamed with Daniel Melanchuk, Garrett Clegg and Jordan Jensen for a sixth place finish in the 800 meter relay. Viking teammates Junah Overson, Felix Pexton, Ian Lee and Micah Hooper took home fourth in the 3200 meter relay.
Davis finished 15th in team scoring. Top Dart performers were junior Johnny Parker with a third place finish in discus, junior Noah Hauck with a sixth in 800 meters, junior Sam Coleman with a seventh in 200 meters and junior Joshua Conlin with a seventh in pole vault.
Farmington was 28th in team scoring. Top Phoenix performances were from senior Will Peterson with a seventh in 100 meters, senior Tanner Nielsen with a sixth in 200 meters, and a fourth place in the 400 meter relay from Nielsen, Peterson, Eli Hirst and Hank Hatch.
In girls competition, Farmington finished 27th with all of its points coming from senior Sage Baxter, who finished second in the pole vault. Davis was 31st, led by junior Lydia Tarber with a third place finish in the 300 meter hurdles. Viewmont was 34th. The Viking 3200 relay team of Lydia Stringfellow, Alyssa Clayton, Julia VanOrman and Quincy Marshall took fourth.
The state meet separates schools by classification, so Davis and Farmington will be competing in 6A, with Bountiful, Woods Cross and Viewmont in 5A. Events run all three days and state champions will be declared late Saturday afternoon on the Clarence F. Robinson Track in Provo.
