The second season: state baseball tournament offers fresh start for local teams

The long regular season is in the book for high school baseball teams. Now, the all-important state tournament is here.
Though a handful of teams enter the playoffs as favorites to win it all, every team has an equal shot of advancing. The Class 6A state tournament begins Wednesday with the best-of-three super regionals. Winners of these contests advance to the single-elimination regionals on May 18. The Class 5A tournament started on May 8 and continues with the regionals on Wednesday.
Woods Cross
The Wildcats placed second in Region 6 with a 9-7 record and grabbed the 14th seed in the state tournament. Wood Cross’ season continued after a two-game sweep of No. 19 Box Elder, a school it used to compete against regularly as a member of Region 5.
In game one of the super regionals on May 8, Woods Cross earned a 10-8 win on the strength of 15 hits. The offense was humming for the Wildcats, with Alex Razee delivering a huge game: a home run and three runs batted in. Beckham Stanger and James Hallows each hit triples, while Paxton Healy and Tyson Devore had doubles.
The following day, Woods Cross moved on to the regionals with a big 8-3 win in game two over Box Elder. The win was the 15th victory of the season for Woods Cross against 10 defeats. It set up a matchup with Pleasant Grove, the No. 3 seed on Wednesday. The regionals are also a best-of-three series for 5A teams. The winner of the Woods Cross Pleasant Grove series will move to double-elimination bracket play May 18 against either West Jordan or Roy.
Bountiful
The Redhawks’ season ended earlier than they would have hoped, with a 2-1 series defeat in the super regionals to Salem Hills May 8 and 9. With the loss, Bountiful finished the 2026 campaign with an overall mark of 12-15. Bountiful went 9-9 in Region 6 games, good enough for fourth place in the seven-team league.
The Bountiful–Salem Hills series was the only one of eight super regionals matchups that went the full three games. The first two games of the series went down to the wire.
In game one, Salem Hills prevailed 4-3 despite committing five errors. Bountiful managed just five hits to six for the Skyhawks. The Redhawks had two runs in the first inning but didn’t get on the board again until the top of the sixth. That sixth-inning run tied things at 3-3, but Salem Hills got a run in the bottom of the sixth and kept Bountiful from scoring in the seventh.
The next day, the Redhawks kept their season alive.
Game two was a 6-5 nail biter in favor of Bountiful, with the Redhawks scoring the game-winning game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kyson Burningham batted in two runs, while Hudson Malmrose, Dax Jenkins and J Castleberry each had RBIs.
Gane three, however, was a much different story.
Salem Hills ended Bountiful’s season with a 16-4 rout, outhitting the Redhawks 17-6. In a crazy seventh inning, Salem Hills turned a 4-0 game into a 16-0 laugher before Bountiful scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh. It was far from enough, unfortunately for Bountiful. Malmrose was the star for Bountiful, hitting a seventh-inning home run and driving in a score. Jenkins and Castleberry each hit doubles.
Davis
In Class 6A play, Davis faces a challenging road in the tournament. The 12th-seeded Darts drew fifth-seeded Lehi in the super regionals in the best-of-three series that begins Wednesday.
The Darts placed second in Region 1 with a 9-3 record and begin the tournament with an overall mark of 15-10. Davis finished the regular season with a trio of blowout wins over Weber. In these victories, Davis unleashed a devastating offense, racking up 10 runs, 16 runs and 23 runs in the three wins, respectively.
But the state tournament matchup with Lehi will almost certainly be more challenging.
Lehi enters the super regionals with a 14-10 record, having battled in a competitive Region 3. Game two of the series will be Thursday. If Davis upsets Lehi, it will take on the winner of Riverton and Cedar Valley in bracket play on May 18.
Farmington
If Davis has a challenging matchup in the 6A playoffs, Farmington’s task is Herculean.
The Phoenix, seeded 16th, drew top-seeded American Fork in the tournament and must find a way to beat the Cavemen twice in three tries. American Fork is 17-8, but don’t let that record deceive you. Three of those losses were to out-of-state foes, while the four other defeats were each by a single run (three of which were by identical 7-6 scores).
The Phoenix are 8-16 overall but did win their final regular-season game, a 4-3 decision over Layton on May 7. Farmington scored the game-winning run in its final at-bat in this contest and outhit Layton 10-4, with Kade Parlett and Zach Hecht each driving in a pair of runs.
The Phoenix will need to give it their all against the Cavemen.
If Farmington pulls up the huge upset and takes down the No. 1 team in 6A, it would face the winner of eight-seeded Layton and ninth-seeded Jordan in bracket play, May 18.
Despite a not-so-glossy overall record, the Phoenix did make strides this season following a 7-23 campaign in 2025. Farmington was 11-18 in 2024 and last tasted a winning season in 2022 when it was 21-11.
