In many track events, team championships come down to one final race–the 1600 meter relay. That’s what happened Saturday at the 5A boys state championships at BYU.
Viewmont had a three-point lead on West Jordan entering the race, with the Jaguars knowing they needed to not only win the relay, but hope the Vikings placed no higher than third in that race. And both of those circumstances happened, as West Jordan won the race and Viewmont took third, giving West Jordan its first-ever state 5A boys track title. West Jordan finished with 65 points, Viewmont with 64, still good enough to win the silver trophy.
BOYS
It ended a hectic three-day set of events at BYU, with several local athletes taking first places. In 5A boys, Viewmont senior Jordan Jensen won the 400 meters in a time of 47.25. He also placed second in the 200 meters. The Viewmont 3200 meter relay team of Ayden Lee, Ian Lee, Junah Overson and Micah Hooper captured first place as well. And Viewmont went second-third-fourth in boys javelin, led by sophomore Cash Hawkins, senior Jayce Mecham and junior Braxton Morris.
Other local 5A boys who placed were Ayden Lee of Viewmont, fourth in 800 meters, Bountiful (sixth) and Woods Cross (seventh) in the 400 meter relay, and Viewmont (third) and Woods Cross (eighth) in the 800 meter relay. Woods Cross senior Vili Tapa’atouti placed seventh in the shot put.
In 6A boys, Davis placed seventh as a team. The only individual champion was Davis junior Joshua Conlin, who won the pole vault with a jump of 14-0. Farmington junior Jacob Homer placed seventh in that event.
Other 6A boys who placed were Davis junior Johnny Parker (second in discus and eighth in shot put), Davis senior Sam Coleman (eighth in 100 meters), Davis junior Noah Hauck (sixth in 800 meters and fourth in 1600 meters), Farmington senior Tanner Nielsen (third in 300 meters), Davis senior Conner Brown (fourth in high jump), and Farmington senior Isaac Hogge (seventh in 110 hurdles). Farmington took sixth in the 400 meter relay, while Davis took second in the 3200 meter relay and third in the 1600 relay.
GIRLS
Davis finished fifth in 6A team scoring, thanks largely in part to junior Lydia Tarbet. She medaled in all four events, taking state championships in the 100 meters and 300 hurdles, and finishing second in both the 200 meters and 100 hurdles. Davis girls also placed in three relays— fifth in the 800 meters, second in the 1600 meters and seventh in the 3200 meters. Davis senior Sienna Holje was third in the 400 meters and teammate junior Megan Neuenswander was fifth in that event. Holje also took seventh in the 300 hurdles. Junior Kate Willard of Davis placed seventh in high jump.
Farmington junior Addisyn Webb medaled with a third place finish in the long jump, and the Phoenix 400 relay team took eighth.
In 5A girls, the Viewmont 3200 meter relay team of Lydia Stringfellow, Kathryn Lee, Julia Van Orman and Brookly Brady won the state title in a time of 7:51.33. Viewmont also placed seventh in the 1600 meter relay. Woods Cross had three individual medalists, as senior Brie Nydegger was fifth in the 800 meters, senior Kirra Singley placed second in 100 hurdles, and junior McCall Preston was third in the high jump. Woods Cross also placed eighth in the 400 meter relay.
