BOUNTIFUL—There was excitement in the air as the Bountiful High School band concert got underway May 14 but part way through an even bigger surprise took place as Davis School District administrators walked on stage and announced that Band Director Branson Bell was named the Davis School District 2027 Teacher of the Year. Bell, who is a former student, took over after longtime band director Danny Turnblom retired.  

In addition to the award, Bell also received an all-expense paid, one-year lease on a new 2026 Kia Sportage from Young Kia and gas for an entire year. Goldenwest Insurance Services is providing insurance.

“It was a big surprise,” said Bell. “I went backstage during the concert to get equipment and (Superintendent) Dan Linford and Logan Toone and other administrators were huddled back there.”

It’s good for the students to know that the district values the arts, he said. “We have the best equipment, we’re just the best. The administration lets the kids know they care about them. It’s a breath of fresh air. The music program is so important.”

Bell said it’s not about him. “It’s an incredible experience. I have them then they move on. It’s about them. The reward is getting kids excited. The validation is a blessing in my eyes.”

Teaching music is a juggling act, he said. “It’s a combination of rigor. Providing music that pushes them to success and turns them into incredible musicians.”

It’s also about relationships, said Bell. “If all you had was rigor, it would be lifeless music. Without connection you wouldn’t see progress. You might have Jan Doe over here playing the saxophone with a squeak but she’s proud to play. Then over there is John who is at a higher level. Both need to feel loved to become incredible musicians.”

Bell said they have created an art performing gallery. “We’re playing with the Bountiful Philharmonia and they’ve performed on Veterans Day. It’s nice to see the youth make a meaningful connection with vets. We also collaborate in school.”

That’s what it’s all about, he said. “They can see the fruits of the rigor. They don’t leave the room solving cancer or a math problem. The kids do go off to those things. But the rigor of band class makes them love it. It’s all about finding your passion. That’s what made me who I am after 30 plus years. I’m so thankful.”
