North Salt Lake celebrated its youth and future leaders with the Youth City Council Scholarship Awards that were presented to the Youth City Council members at a recent city council meeting. “I am so appreciative of the fact that we have an active youth city council in our city,” said City Manager Ken Latham. “The service that you guys perform is really outstanding. You do so many things for the residents of the city, for those at the food bank. We’re appreciative that you’re here – learning about the city, learning about service.”

Audrey Beebe, advisor to the Youth City Council members, presented the scholarship awards and introduced each of the seven city council members, praising their self-discipline and leadership skills. “This program develops leaders which will go on to be good citizens in our community in the very near future,” she said.

The Youth City Council is run by an executive committee, made up by Youth Mayor Ainsley Reese, Youth City Manager Rachel Allen, Youth City Recorder Anniston Cottle, and four committee chair persons- Activities Chair Caroline Golden, Publicity Chair Aurora Beebe, Leadership Chair Allison Abel, and Service Chair Lucy Ballard. “They plan, execute, and oversee all the activities, guest speakers, field trips and service projects,” Audrey Beebe. “Service projects include such things as cleaning hiking trails, food pantry donation drives and tying quilts for Primary Children’s Hospital.

The Scholarship Award for the Youth Mayor was $300, and $200 for the committee members. They are earned through a points system, with points being accrued through attending meetings and service projects throughout the year. In order to receive the scholarship, committee members must earn 75% of the possible points. According to Audrey Beebe this was the first year since she had become an advisor that each city council member was eligible for the scholarship.

“They are a great group,” said Mayor Brian Horrocks.

Youth City Council meetings are held at North Salt Lake City Hall every Tuesday from 5 to 6 p.m. The current application period for membership is open until Sept. 30, 2026. Those from 9th-12th grade who are interested can fill out an application form on the City Website.
