Fun community parties and events put on by North Salt Lake City are meticulously conceived and planned by the volunteers of the Civic Events Committee. A new member has joined the ranks of the Committee. They are Kathleen Kleinman, a long-time resident of North Salt Lake. Nominated by City Councilmember Heidi Smoot, Kleinman’s appointment was sustained by the other council members during a recent meeting.
Kathleen Kleinman has lived in the city for almost 26 years, and loves the sense of community that she has found here. She has a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in fashion merchandising and a master’s degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix. A true Renaissance Woman, she has been a project manager for Japan Airlines, an ice skating coach, Program Manager for foreign students at Weber State University, and freelance makeup artist for Lancôme and Estée Lauder companies. She has done make up for many local politicians. In City Councilmember Heidi Smoot’s mind, the understanding of what goes on behind the scenes at a large event that Kleinman would have gleaned from her time at ice skating competitions made her a perfect candidate for the position. In an interview, Smoot praised Kleinman’s willingness to serve and described her as a well-rounded and organized individual. “I’m excited for this opportunity,” Kleinman said. “I love North Salt Lake. I’ve been here since May of 2000 … so I’ve seen a lot of growth in the city. I’m excited to be involved and help everyone out.”
Kleinman joins the committee alongside Dallas Golden, Sarah Golden, Catherine Jensen, and City Councilmember Tammy Clayton. The purpose of the committee is to plan events that unite the residents of North Salt Lake and foster a sense of community spirit. They are behind such events as Pride Month celebrations, the Kite Festival, NSL Reads, Winter Lights Fest, Halloween Trot &Treat Spooktacular, and Arbor Day tree planting.
Members of the Civics Events Committee are not government employees, but volunteers bound together through a love of North Salt Lake and a willingness to serve. Meeting once a month, each committee member takes a turn chairing planning the event with the other committee members, members of the city council and youth city council, reaching out to vendors, and publicizing the event on social media. A photographer is present at all city events to preserve them for history. All events are free to attend.
If a resident has an idea for an event, they can present it during the public comment section of the events committee meeting. It will then be voted upon by the committee members, and if it passes it will then be moved up to the city council for a final vote. All city events are approved by the city council.
“I’ve lived in North Salt Lake my whole life, and love the city,” said committee member Tammy Clayton. “The Events Committee is a wonderful way to say that cities don’t just need to be run, they’re also a place to have fun.”
