LAYTON—Ready to throw back to the 70s when disco was all the rage? Boogie Wonder Band brings back the vibe of the Rolling Stones and Earth, Wind & Fire as they kick off the Davis Arts Council Summer Nights With The Stars series at The Kenley Amphitheater, Saturday, June 20.
“We’re a 10 piece, disco and funk band,” said bass player Boogie Cindy. “We have been touring the world since 1996 and it’s actually our second time in Utah. We played with the Utah Symphony in Park City. We’re very excited to return.”
The band’s performance is high energy, she said. “We have a big light show that goes with it. We all wear custom made outfits that are bigger than life and we all dance.”
Cindy said the band is made up of two horns, percussion, drum, guitar, bass and three vocalists. “It’s a big band. There’s no iPad on stage. All you see is live.”
People have to be ready to get up to dance, she said. “It’s pretty rare that people stay still for “Dancing Queen” or “I Will Survive.” People get up and they want to dance and we encourage them to do so. Sometimes people come all dressed up so there’s even more ambience.”
Cindy said she knew from a young age she would be a musician. “The bass and the disco music was always very appealing because it’s a bit more complicated and it’s a bit of a challenge to play. I’ve been studying over the years with great teachers. I was able to play and create my band with the music I wanted to do.”
Cindy said she started the band because of her love for disco music. “I’m the bass player and in disco music it’s all about the bass. We just had this vision of what it could be and it all came together quickly.”
The band is based out of Montreal, Canada. “We started touring in the first year all over the states and we went to Japan,” she said. “We’ve been touring the world and doing thousands and thousands of shows all over.”
It’s a lot of fun, said Cindy. “We go to places together and it’s like a family.”
The band had the chance to play with the symphony, she said. “Utah Symphony is one of the best so it was a pleasure to perform our show with them. Disco music was created back when it was performed by Barry White and Donna Summer. All that music was created with a symphony orchestra. When we had the chance to play with the orchestra it was so impressive so that’s a good memory.”
Cindy said the music they play is 70s disco and funk. “So it’s music that can bring people back to an era where they were young and happy and they didn’t care about anything in the world – only dancing.”
The band tries to share that with their fans, she said. “We make them dance, we make them forget about everything for a night and just be in the moment. Every time we go on the stage we have the best time with the crowd. It gives us energy.”
Come with comfortable shoes, Cindy said. “Get ready to boogie. It’s for the whole family. Kids will love it because we’re colorful and we’re all dressed up so it adds to the experience. So it’s definitely something that you want to bring the kids and the grandkids to and have a party together.”
DAC encourages fans to dress up because they will be awarding some prizes for fun disco costumes.
As of press time there were some orchestra tickets left ($48.60) and grass ($29.16). There are a few single reserved seats. For tickets visit Tickets or a list of shows see Upcoming shows.
