With the beginning of summer comes the end of a fiscal year for West Bountiful. As the city closes the books on 12 months where street renovation projects, water meter upgrades and golf net replacements took place, they begin to prepare for the needs of 2027.
According to City Administrator Duane Huffman, items factored into this year’s budget include waterline and road work projects, which will potentially come to streets like 700 North and 975 West. Purchasing two police vehicles is a part of the city's plans, as well as machinery for Lakeside Golf Course, which will include a mower, new equipment to pick up golf balls and new golf ball dispersion technology for the driving range.
“The thing that we’re always kind of trying to make sure of is that we’re not overextending the resources that we have, that our ongoing expenses are lining up with our ongoing revenues and that we’re providing the services that the community needs and wants,” said Huffman.
For this upcoming fiscal year, one of those “needs and wants” includes the funding of America250 celebrations. After attending the Utah League of Cities and Towns midyear conference in St. George, council members Julie Thompson and Jenn Nielsen felt inspired to oversee unique, West Bountiful initiatives that honored the country’s birthday. Up to $30,000 of the Recreation, Arts and Parks tax budget has been set aside for this purpose.
The city’s 2025/26 budget has been amended periodically throughout the year – allocating funds to projects that needed additional support like the 660 West construction. In planning that budget, one of West Bountiful’s main focuses was to upgrade water meters for all residents, connecting homes to a more advanced system. The city also set aside funds to renovate Child’s Park, which Huffman says are expected to be moved over to July.
In addition to the budget, the council voted on changes to employee pay scales. Both items were brought forward during a public hearing on June 2, and voted on during a June 16 city council meeting. The final 26/27 fiscal year budget can be found in a meeting agenda posted for June 16.
